Case from 2021–2023 (U.S. Attorney's Office release: Nov. 19, 2021; later developments are from court records and other sources cited below). Published on Scammers.com Oct. 16, 2026; case status is current as of that date.
Chicago businessman Brian Blalock claimed to earn big profits buying and selling heavy industrial equipment. On Sept. 13, 2023, he was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $358,400 in restitution, according to court records [2]. He had pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud before U.S. District Judge Joan H. Lefkow. The prison term runs concurrently with a sentence imposed in Texas, the judgment states.
How the scheme worked
According to the indictment returned Nov. 18, 2021, as described by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois [1]:
- Three companies. Blalock ran PWC Holdings LLC, Brian Blalock LLC and Parkwood Companies LLC, all based in Chicago. They supposedly bought and sold trucks, trailers, road construction machines, oil field equipment and generators.
- Two pitches. He told victims he would either sell them equipment directly or use their money to buy and resell equipment and share the profits.
- Nothing delivered. Prosecutors said he never intended to deliver equipment or buy and sell anything with investors' money.
- Personal spending. He used much of the money on rent, utilities, restaurant meals and retail purchases.
- Losses. From 2018 to 2021, victims lost at least $350,000.
The person sentenced
Brian Blalock, 37 at indictment, Chicago [1] [2]
- Charges: nine counts of wire fraud. Case No. 1:21-cr-00713 (N.D. Ill.).
- Plea: guilty to Count 1, Jan. 25, 2023. The remaining counts were dismissed at sentencing.
- Sentence: 33 months in prison, concurrent with a Texas state sentence; 3 years of supervised release; restitution corrected to $358,400. The hearing was Sept. 13, 2023, and judgment was signed Sept. 14, 2023.
- Investigation: the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with help from the Illinois Securities Department.
Red flags
- An equipment broker who wants full payment up front and keeps delaying delivery.
- "Fund my next equipment flip and split the profit" offers with no paperwork showing the equipment exists.
- No titles, serial numbers, inspection reports or bills of sale for big-ticket machinery.
What to do
- Verify the equipment exists. Ask for serial or VIN numbers and titles, check them against lien and theft databases, and inspect in person or through a third party.
- Use escrow for large equipment purchases, and pay only on delivery or transfer of title.
- Treat profit-sharing "investments" as securities. Check with the Illinois Securities Department before investing, and report suspected fraud to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at uspis.gov or the FBI at ic3.gov.
