Case from 2017–2018 (U.S. Attorney's Office latest release: April 17, 2018). Published on Scammers.com Oct. 16, 2026; case status is current as of that date.

Daniel Glick, who owned three accounting and financial services firms in Orland Park, Illinois, was sentenced on April 17, 2018, to 151 months in federal prison for stealing $5.2 million from clients, most of them elderly, including his own in-laws and two people in nursing homes, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois announced [1]. He was ordered to pay $5.2 million in restitution.

How the scheme worked

According to prosecutors [1] [2]:

  1. Full-service trust: Glick ran Financial Management Strategies Inc., Glick Accounting Services Inc. and Glick & Associates Ltd., which offered accounting, tax, investment and financial services.
  2. Forgery: He gave financial institutions forged checks and other phony documents.
  3. Lies to clients: He misled clients about how their money was used and how safe it was.
  4. Where it went: He spent money on a Mercedes-Benz, his mortgage and business expenses, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to two business associates, and made Ponzi-type payments to clients.

The scheme ran from 2011 to 2017.

The person sentenced

Daniel Glick, 65 at sentencing, of Chicago [1]

  • Charge (Nov. 15, 2017): one count of wire fraud, filed by criminal information [2].
  • Plea: pleaded guilty in 2018 to wire fraud.
  • Sentence (April 17, 2018): 151 months in prison and $5.2 million in restitution, imposed by U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman.
  • Investigation: FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with help from the SEC and the Illinois Attorney General's Office.

Red flags

  • Your accountant or tax preparer also controls your investments with no outside custodian.
  • Checks or withdrawals you don't recognize on an older relative's account.
  • Vague answers about where money is held or why statements are late.

What to do if you're targeted

  1. Separate roles: keep tax preparation, investment advice and custody of assets with different, independent firms.
  2. Monitor accounts of relatives in nursing homes, or appoint a second trusted person to review them.
  3. Report elder financial exploitation to Adult Protective Services, the Illinois Attorney General, or the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-372-8311.
