Case from 2025–2026 (U.S. Attorney's Office release: May 30, 2025; later developments are from court records and other sources cited below). Published on Scammers.com Oct. 16, 2026; case status is current as of that date.

Jordan Roman, 47, of Rancho Park, California, an investment advisor who ran Illinois-based Drumstick Timpani Fund L.P., was sentenced on Jan. 28, 2026, after pleading guilty to wire fraud for defrauding a suburban Chicago client out of about $500,000, according to federal court records [2]. The judgment orders one day in custody, considered already served, three years of supervised release that includes four months in a community corrections facility, and $500,000 in restitution.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois announced the charge on May 30, 2025 [1]. We found no later press release on the plea or sentence.

How the scheme worked

According to the criminal information as summarized by prosecutors [1]:

  1. The fund: Roman solicited money from clients through Drumstick Timpani Fund L.P.
  2. False claims: From 2012 to 2024, he obtained money from an investor in a Chicago suburb by misrepresenting how it would be used and boasting falsely about its performance and value.
  3. Personal bills: He told the investor he would invest the money for the investor, while knowing some would pay his own utility and credit card bills.
  4. Fake paperwork: He hid the misuse with bogus account statements and tax forms showing the investment was worth more than it was.

The government's sentencing memo says the client invested $500,000 in February 2017, and Roman began using part of it on personal debts almost immediately. It also says he kept misstating the value from 2018 to 2023, including in a March 2023 email [3]. Prosecutors had asked for 21 months in prison.

Red flags

  • Statements and tax forms produced by the manager's own small fund with no independent administrator or auditor.
  • A long relationship with steadily "rising" values but no way to withdraw easily.
  • Vague answers when you ask exactly what your money is invested in.

What to do if you're targeted

  1. Ask who the fund's custodian, administrator and auditor are, and contact them yourself.
