On Sept. 25, 2026, federal prosecutors in Tampa announced an indictment charging Kristopher Lunsford, 46, of Henderson, Nevada (formerly of Georgia), with six counts of wire fraud and two counts of money laundering in what they describe as a more than $105 million semi-truck lease investment scheme [1]. The indictment seeks forfeiture of about $105.9 million in alleged proceeds [1].
Important: An indictment is an allegation. Lunsford is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
How the alleged scheme worked
- The passive-income pitch. According to the indictment, Lunsford and others solicited hundreds of investors to buy leases for semi-trucks. He allegedly promised to handle purchasing trucks, hiring drivers, insurance, and operations so investors would do no work and still earn passive income [1].
- The numbers that sold it. Investors were typically told they could put up about $25,000 to $40,000 per truck and receive a guaranteed weekly payout of roughly $1,000 to $1,250 from operating profits [1].
- Where the money allegedly went. Between about December 2023 and May 2025, prosecutors say more than $105 million was raised. Rather than paying investors from real trucking profits, Lunsford allegedly used about $75 million of new investors’ money to pay earlier investors—classic Ponzi mechanics—and more than $25 million for personal enrichment, including real estate, sports cars, jewelry, luxury goods, private charters, and spending at resorts, casinos, and nightclubs. About $2 million allegedly went to business operations [1].
The SEC filed a parallel civil case the day before the criminal announcement. According to Litigation Release No. 26648, the Commission charged Lunsford, AKL Transport LLC, and Southern Truck Leasing LLC with raising at least $127 million from about 765 investors in an alleged truck-leasing Ponzi scheme, diverting about $52 million to earlier investors and about $33 million to Lunsford’s personal use, and overstating a claim of operating roughly 2,000 trucks [3]. Without admitting the SEC’s allegations, Lunsford and the companies consented to bifurcated judgments (subject to court approval) that would enjoin securities-law violations and bar Lunsford from most securities offerings, with disgorgement and penalties to be decided later [3]. A civil settlement without admission is not a criminal conviction.
Who is charged and case status
Kristopher Lunsford, 46, Henderson, Nevada, faces six wire-fraud counts (each carrying a statutory maximum of 20 years if convicted) and two money-laundering counts (each up to 10 years if convicted) [1]. The case is being investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida [1]. The USAO maintains a victim-information page for the case [2].
Red flags
- “Guaranteed” weekly payouts from a business that still needs trucks, drivers, freight, and insurance to earn money.
- Pressure to invest large sums quickly for “passive” income with no operational role.
- Returns that sound like a salary ($1,000-plus a week) on a $25,000–$40,000 stake—far above ordinary trucking economics.
- Luxury lifestyle marketing that emphasizes the promoter’s cars, travel, or nightlife more than audited financials.
- Difficulty getting independent confirmation of truck titles, leases, insurance, and freight contracts.
What to do if you invested or were solicited
- Preserve records: contracts, wires, texts, emails, pitch decks, and bank statements.
- Contact the FBI victim questionnaire for this investigation if you have not already: forms.fbi.gov/victims/TruckLeaseFraud, or email TruckLeaseFraud@fbi.gov [1].
- Report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI at ic3.gov.
- Check any securities professional at Investor.gov and BrokerCheck.
- Talk to a lawyer before signing any “settlement,” “recovery,” or third-party collection offer—recovery scams often target people who already lost money.
