Case from 2024–2026 (U.S. Attorney's Office latest release: April 16, 2026). Published on Scammers.com Oct. 16, 2026; case status is current as of that date.

Robert Dunlap, 55, of Houston, was sentenced on April 14, 2026, to 23 years in federal prison for a cryptocurrency scam in which he falsely claimed his "Meta-1 Coin" was backed by billions of dollars in gold and fine art, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois announced [1]. Nearly 1,000 investors lost more than $20 million, and many lost all their savings, according to the sentencing release.

How the scheme worked

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office [1] [2]:

  1. The coin: From 2018 to 2023, Dunlap claimed to run a cryptocurrency business selling a digital asset called "Meta-1 Coin" through a "Meta-1 Coin Trust."
  2. Fake backing: He told investors the coin was backed by as much as $1 billion in art and $44 billion in gold, and falsely claimed an accounting firm had audited the gold and certified its value.
  3. Name-brand art: The supposed art collection was said to include works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Vincent van Gogh.
  4. Rigged price: He used automated trading bots to inflate Meta-1 Coin's price and trading volume on the "Meta Exchange," a website he created.
  5. Cover documents: He created bogus legal, insurance and other documents to hide that he did not have the gold or art.

The 2024 indictment also alleged investors were told they could withdraw at any time by exchanging the coin for other cryptocurrencies or U.S. dollars [3].

The loss figure grew as the case went on: the 2024 indictment release cited more than $10 million, the conviction release at least $14 million, and the sentencing release more than $20 million [3] [2] [1].

The person sentenced

Robert Dunlap, 55, Houston [1]

  • Arrest: arrested in Virginia in March 2024 and ordered removed in custody to Chicago [3].
  • Verdict: convicted by a federal jury on Nov. 17, 2025, of two counts of mail fraud after a weeklong trial [2].
  • Sentence: 23 years in federal prison plus restitution, imposed April 14, 2026, by U.S. District Judge LaShonda A. Hunt.
  • Investigation: FBI Chicago and IRS Criminal Investigation, with help from the SEC and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia; prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jared Hasten and Paige Nutini.

"Over the years, defendant was unrepentant and his lies became bigger," prosecutors wrote in their sentencing memorandum, according to the release [1].

Red flags

  • A coin "backed" by gold, art or other hard assets that you can't independently verify.
  • Claims of audits without a report you can confirm directly with the named accounting firm.
  • Trading only on the promoter's own exchange, where prices and volume can be faked.
  • Promises you can cash out "any time" with no track record of withdrawals.

What to do if you're targeted

  1. Call the auditor yourself using contact information you find independently.
  2. Be wary of tokens that trade only on one obscure platform.
  3. Report crypto investment fraud to the FBI at ic3.gov and the SEC at sec.gov/tcr.
