Case from 2017–2026 (U.S. Attorney's Office latest release: Oct. 20, 2021; later developments are from court records and other sources cited below). Published on Scammers.com Oct. 16, 2026; case status is current as of that date.
Shawn Baldwin of Olympia Fields, Illinois, owned and controlled several Chicago investment firms. He was sentenced Oct. 18, 2021, to 17 years in federal prison for swindling more than $10 million from clients and lenders, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois [1]. A jury convicted him in February 2019 on seven counts of wire fraud [2].
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit affirmed his conviction and sentence on Aug. 13, 2025 [4] and denied rehearing on Sept. 10, 2025. The U.S. Supreme Court denied his petition for review on June 8, 2026 [5].
How the scheme worked
According to prosecutors and evidence at trial [1] [2]:
- Inflated credentials. From 2006 to 2017, Baldwin exaggerated his financial success and connections to get more than $11 million from at least 24 investors and lenders. He claimed compliance officers and professional advisors worked with his firms when they didn't.
- Personal spending. He said the money would go into stocks and other investments, but spent much of it on jewelry, tuition and international travel.
- Hidden discipline. He misrepresented or played down regulatory actions against him, including the 2009 revocation of his FINRA certifications and a permanent ban on selling securities or giving investment advice that Illinois imposed in 2013.
- Fake statements and lulling. He sent victims bogus account statements and told them lucrative deals and IPO profits were coming.
The Seventh Circuit opinion adds detail [4]:
- Who he targeted. The scheme started with high school and college friends, business contacts and a friend's widow.
- Currency Clicks. He later recruited investors for a supposed social media platform for traders that he said he would take public in an IPO. The court called it "a sham."
- Ponzi payments. He used later victims' money, including more than $8 million from one foreign businessman and entities that businessman controlled, to repay earlier victims "in classic Ponzi fashion."
"Defendant moved from one victim to another, using their money to continue traveling in style around the world to sustain a false image of a successful financier," prosecutors wrote in their sentencing memorandum [1].

Red flags
- A money manager who brushes off regulatory history. Look it up yourself. A FINRA bar or state ban is disqualifying.
- Account statements that come only from the manager, not an independent custodian.
- "Pre-IPO" stakes in the manager's own startup offered to friends and family.
- Endless explanations for why you can't get your money back.
What to do
- Check FINRA BrokerCheck at brokercheck.finra.org, the SEC's adviser search at adviserinfo.sec.gov, and the Illinois Securities Department's enforcement actions.
- Insist on an independent custodian that sends statements directly to you.
- Report suspected investment fraud to the SEC at sec.gov/tcr and the FBI at ic3.gov.
