Suchit Patel has been charged in Galveston County, Texas, with engaging in organized criminal activity, a first-degree felony, after Friendswood police arrested him Oct. 3, 2026, at a home in the 13900 block of Manobrook Court in Richmond, according to the Friendswood Police Department [1]. Police said investigators recovered about $401,565.40 in gold, silver and cash during the search [1]. Police said his bond was set at $10 million [1], and court records show a judge denied a request to reduce it on Oct. 9 [2].

Important: Patel has been charged, not convicted, and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Through his lawyers, he disputes the allegations (see below). Details of the alleged scheme come from the Friendswood Police Department; court details come from the Galveston County docket for his case.

Patel's case grew out of the same Friendswood investigation that led to the Sept. 16 arrest of alleged courier Rajdeep Singh, who is covered separately on scammers.com in our gold-bar courier roundup. This article focuses on Patel.

How the scheme allegedly worked

According to the Friendswood Police Department [1]:

  1. Fake federal agent. An elderly Friendswood resident reported on Sept. 15, 2026, that someone posing as a federal agent had persuaded her to provide $25,000 in gift cards and convert about $185,000 of her savings into gold bars.
  2. Courier handoff. The gold was turned over to a courier. Investigators identified the alleged courier as Rajdeep Singh, 27, of California, and arrested him Sept. 16 in Fort Bend County with help from the Meadows Place Police Department.
  3. Lead to Patel. Singh's arrest "ultimately led investigators to Patel," the department said.
  4. Arrest and search. At about 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 3, investigators executed a Galveston County arrest warrant and a Fort Bend County search warrant at the Richmond home and arrested Patel. They recovered about $401,565.40 in gold, silver and cash. Through recent search warrants, police say they have recovered more than $750,000 in assets and are working to identify the victims the property belongs to.
  5. Multiple victims suspected. The Friendswood Police Department said it believes Patel is connected to multiple victims in the Houston area, and it asked anyone who recognizes a vehicle shown in a department photo to call.

The $750,000-plus figure is the total recovered across several warrants. Police have not said it was all taken from victims by Patel.

"These criminals are stealing the life savings of elderly members of our community, and we are committed to finding everyone involved," Friendswood Police Chief Josh Rogers said in the department's announcement [1].

Patel's response

In an Oct. 6 application for a writ of habeas corpus on bail, which appears on the court docket [2], Patel's lawyers asked the court to cut his bond from $10 million to $100,000. According to Wealth of Geeks, which reviewed the filing, they argued that Patel offered gold-testing (assaying) services, was holding gold a customer had brought him to test for a fee, and did not know it was stolen. They also said he had not contacted the victim or anyone else to defraud them and did not know Singh [5]. The judge denied the bond reduction on Oct. 9 [2]. Scammers.com has not seen the filing itself. These are defense arguments, not findings by the court. Patel is represented by retained attorney Dick DeGuerin, according to the docket [2].

The person charged

Suchit Patel, arrested at a home in Richmond, Texas [1][2].

  • Charge: engaging in organized criminal activity (Texas Penal Code § 71.02(b)), first-degree felony; offense date Oct. 3, 2026 [2]. Police described the underlying offense as theft of less than $300,000 [1].
  • Court: 56th District Court, Galveston County, Judge Lonnie Cox; case 26-CR-4065, filed Oct. 5, 2026 [2].
  • Bond: $10 million, according to police [1]. On Oct. 9 the judge denied a reduction and ordered that, if Patel makes bond, he must first turn over his visa/passport and wear an ankle monitor [2]. Police said an immigration detainer has also been placed on him [1].
  • Next hearing: first disposition setting, Nov. 17, 2026, at 9 a.m. The case was listed as pre-indictment as of Oct. 10 [2].

Related defendant (separate coverage): Rajdeep Singh, 27, of California, arrested Sept. 16 as the alleged courier in the Friendswood gift-card and gold-bar case [1].

Red flags

The FBI says these scams follow a pattern [6][7]:

  • Callers claiming to be federal agents or other officials who say your money is at risk and must be "protected."
  • Instructions to buy gold, precious metals or gift cards, or to withdraw cash. The FBI says the U.S. government will never ask you to buy gold or other precious metals [6].
  • Secrecy rules, such as being told not to tell family, your bank or police [7].
  • A stranger courier sent to pick up cash or gold, sometimes using a passcode such as a dollar bill's serial number [6].

What to do if you're targeted

  1. Hang up and call your local police. If you have information about this case, contact the Friendswood Police Department at 281-996-3300 [1].
  2. Never buy gold or gift cards, or hand valuables to a courier, because a caller claiming to be law enforcement told you to [6][7].
  3. Report to the FBI at ic3.gov. If you are 60 or older and need help filing, call the DOJ Elder Justice Hotline at 1-833-FRAUD-11 (1-833-372-8311) [6].
  4. If you recognize the vehicle in the department's photo, contact Friendswood police [1].
