Trevor Uhls, 29, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, pleaded guilty on Oct. 15, 2026, to wire fraud and money laundering in a Ponzi scheme that fraudulently obtained more than $3.8 million from at least 60 investors, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri announced [1]. Investor funds were misappropriated for Uhls’ personal benefit, according to court documents cited in the release [1].

Important: Uhls has pleaded guilty. Sentencing has not yet been announced in the sources reviewed. Statutory maximums below are set by Congress; the judge will determine the actual sentence.

How the scheme worked

According to the indictment and complaint summarized by the U.S. Attorney’s Office [1]:

  1. Pitch: Uhls solicited individual investors with false and misleading representations about investment opportunities.
  2. Example transaction: On or about June 12, 2025, he texted an Independence, Missouri, investor claiming the investor could earn 8.5% interest by pooling money with others for a storage-unit investment. The investor wired money to Uhls’ checking account.
  3. No real investment: A review of Uhls’ financial records found no evidence he invested that victim’s money in storage units, according to the complaint.
  4. Scale: Overall, the scheme obtained more than $3.8 million from at least 60 people, with funds used for Uhls’ personal benefit rather than the promised investments—a classic Ponzi pattern of taking new money and spending it instead of generating returns.

An indictment returned Aug. 26, 2026, charged one count of wire fraud and one count of money laundering [1].

The person charged

Trevor Uhls, 29, Lee’s Summit, Mo. [1]

  • Court: U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri; plea before Judge Stephen R. Bough.
  • Plea (Oct. 15, 2026): wire fraud and money laundering (one count each).
  • Statutory exposure (informational): up to 20 years for wire fraud and up to 10 years for money laundering, plus supervised release and fines up to $250,000 per count as described by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
  • Sentencing date: not stated in the Oct. 15 release (status pending).
  • Investigation: IRS Criminal Investigation; prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dave Ketchmark.

Red flags

  • High fixed returns (such as 8.5%) promised via text for a “pooled” real-estate or storage deal with little documentation.
  • Wires to a personal checking account instead of a registered fund or escrow.
  • No private-placement memorandum, audited statements or proof of property ownership.
  • Pressure to decide quickly based on a personal relationship or local reputation alone.
  • Inability to show where your money sits or how returns are generated.

What to do if you’re targeted

  1. If you invested with Uhls, gather wire records, texts and any offering materials and consult a lawyer about restitution claims.
  2. Report investment fraud to the FBI at ic3.gov and the SEC at sec.gov/tcr.
  3. Before any similar pitch, verify whether the promoter is registered as a broker or adviser through BrokerCheck and your state securities regulator.
  4. Beware of “recovery” callers after a Ponzi headline—they often demand advance fees.
