What happened

Mimikama reported on 30 October 2026 that the Austrian Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer Österreich, WKO) has warned since 29 October 2026 about an email with the subject “Datenaktualisierung 2027 – Ihre Unternehmensdaten” (data update 2027 – your company data). The email asks businesses to check their register data. According to the WKO, the sender shown includes info@branchenregister-at.com and the link leads to branchenregister-at.com. The WKO says the message does not come from the WKO, and the chamber is not involved in the mailing.

How the scam works

The email is built to look like an official business-register routine, which is why it seems believable to company owners. Terms such as “register”, “data check” and “update” give an official impression. Mimikama says it could not verify what the linked page actually does, so actual password theft is not confirmed. The pattern is, however, a familiar one: a link that leads to a page designed to collect information. Mimikama notes that earlier mails of the same type, reported on 12 November 2025 and 29 September 2026, were fake WKO emails about checking company data, and the September 2026 one is described in its headline as turning a “data check” into a bank login. The older cases show the recurring motive but do not automatically say what the current page does.

Mimikama's advice is that recipients should not open the link and should not confirm anything on the page. Whether a genuine request exists can be checked through a WKO contact you already know, or by calling up the official website yourself. Contact details from the suspicious email are not suitable for that, because they come from the same unverified source.

Red flags

  • An email titled “Datenaktualisierung 2027 – Ihre Unternehmensdaten” that asks you to check register data.
  • A sender such as info@branchenregister-at.com that is not a WKO address.
  • A link to branchenregister-at.com rather than the official WKO website.
  • Official-sounding words like “register”, “data check” and “update” used to look authoritative.
  • The same pattern with changed years, seen before in November 2025 and September 2026.

If you were targeted

  1. 1Do not open the link or confirm anything on branchenregister-at.com.
  2. 2Verify a genuine request through a WKO contact you already know or the official website, opened yourself.
  3. 3Do not use contact details from the suspicious email to check it.
  4. 4If you entered data or passwords, change them and tell your bank; report the email to the WKO.
  5. 5Delete the email and warn colleagues who handle company mail.
