What happened

River Valley Radio reported on October 13, 2026 that the Pope County Sheriff's Office in Arkansas is warning residents about a phone scam in which someone impersonates a law enforcement officer and demands money to avoid arrest.

Multiple residents reported calls from a man identifying himself as Lt. Brian Hill of the Pope County Sheriff's Office. The calls reportedly came from 470-908-2745. The sheriff's office says no one named Brian Hill works for the department.

How the scam works

The caller claims the person has a federal warrant for their arrest and must pay 10% of the warrant amount over the phone to avoid being taken into custody. Using a rank, a name and the local sheriff's office makes the call sound official, and the threat of arrest is meant to create panic so the person pays before checking.

The sheriff's office says deputies never call residents to collect money over the phone.
