What happened
The UK Financial Conduct Authority published a clone-firm warning on 16 October 2026 about callassists.com. The FCA says the operators are not authorised but have been contacting people pretending to be an FCA-authorised firm. The fraudsters are using the website callassists.com and two email addresses listed on the warning.
The genuine firm being impersonated is CALL ASSIST LIMITED (Firm Reference Number 304838), based at Axis Court, North Station Road, Colchester, with the website www.call-assist.co.uk. The FCA states that the genuine firm has no connection with the clone firm; Call Assist Limited is being impersonated and is not involved, and its contact details are not the scammers'.
How the scam works
A clone firm copies the name and sometimes the registration details of a real, FCA-authorised business so that people who check the FCA Register believe they are dealing with a regulated firm. The FCA says scammers may give out other false details, including email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and Firm Reference Numbers, may mix these with the genuine firm's details, and may change their contact details over time.
Because the clone is not authorised, anyone who deals with it has no access to the Financial Ombudsman Service and no protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) if things go wrong. If you sent money to a fraudster on or after 7 October 2024, the FCA says you may be covered by reimbursement protections introduced by the Payment Systems Regulator.
The FCA advises that if you're contacted unexpectedly by a financial business, you reply only using the contact details shown on its Firm Checker, not those given by the caller or in an email.
Note: the FCA warning does not describe how this clone approached people; this section reflects the FCA's general guidance on clone firms.
