What happened
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) published a clone firm warning on 21 October 2026 about 'GoTempCover Limited', which it says is not authorised by the FCA but has been contacting people pretending to be an authorised firm. According to the FCA, fraudsters are using the email address support@gotempcover.com and the websites gotempcover.com and drivewisely.app. The FCA says the genuine authorised firm whose details are being claimed is Accelerant Insurance UK Limited (Firm Reference Number 207658), which has no connection with the clone firm. The FCA warns that clone firms may give out other false details, including email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses and Firm Reference Numbers, and may mix them with an authorised firm's genuine details. People dealing with the clone firm will not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or FSCS protection.
What the warning means
A clone firm uses the name, address or Firm Reference Number of a genuine authorised firm to look legitimate. In this case the fraudsters present themselves as an authorised insurer offering temporary cover, a product people often buy quickly and online, for example to drive a borrowed car for a day. Someone who checks the FCA Register may find the genuine firm's details and wrongly assume the website or email is connected to it.
People who buy a policy from a clone firm may pay for cover that doesn't exist, leaving them uninsured on the road, and may hand over personal and card details. The FCA warns that clone firms may give out false email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses and Firm Reference Numbers, or mix them with an authorised firm's genuine details. Its advice is to check the FCA Firm Checker and to contact the authorised firm only using the contact details listed on the Financial Services Register, not those given by the caller, email or website. If you think you have dealt with a clone firm, you can report it to the FCA's consumer helpline on 0800 111 6768.
