What happened
On 30 October 2026 the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) warned that “Northern Index” is a clone of an FCA-authorised fund. The FCA says it is not authorised or registered by the FCA but has been targeting people in the UK while pretending to be authorised. The FCA lists these details as used by the fraudsters: the website ww.northernindex.com (as written by the FCA), the email address support@northernindex.email, six telephone numbers (+16479463102, +442080731617, +442039966374, +61242770372, +61364690668 and +16473653970), and addresses in Canary Wharf in London, Sydney and Toronto. These numbers and addresses are details the fraudsters used, as listed by the FCA, and they do not belong to any real firm. The genuine fund being copied is THE NORTHERN FUNDS, which has no connection with the clone.
How the scam works
The FCA entry does not describe how people were approached or what Northern Index offered. A clone copies the identity of an authorised firm so that a check on the FCA register appears to confirm that the business is real. The spread of numbers and offices across the UK, Canada and Australia is typical of operations that present themselves as an international firm. The FCA warns that scammers may give out other false details, including email addresses, telephone numbers, postal addresses and Firm Reference Numbers, may mix them with genuine details, and may change contact details over time.
The FCA says that people who deal with the clone will not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service and will not be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, so it is unlikely they would recover their money. If money was sent to a fraudster on or after 7 October 2024, protections introduced by the Payment Systems Regulator may apply. The FCA recommends dealing only with firms it authorises, checking them on the FCA Firm Checker, and replying to unexpected contact only with the details on the Firm Checker. Anyone approached by an unauthorised or clone firm can report it to the FCA.

If you were targeted
- 1Do not deal with Northern Index or use the website, numbers or email the FCA lists.
