What happened

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) added a firm called TRADE FLOW to its warning list. The listing gives an address at 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5AB and the website tradeflowsfx.com. The FCA says the firm is unauthorised. The FCA also warns that firms sometimes give incorrect contact details or details belonging to another business or person, so the address shown does not mean that any business there is involved.

How the scam works

The FCA's warnings are short and set out who the firm is and why the public should be careful. They say that anyone dealing with an unauthorised firm will not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if something goes wrong. This write-up describes the general pattern of this kind of listing and not facts about the firm beyond what the FCA states.

Unauthorised trading platforms usually appear through online adverts, social-media messages or unsolicited calls. They offer foreign-exchange or crypto trading with high returns and a smart-looking website, ask for a small first deposit and then show profits on screen. Account managers ask for larger and larger payments. When the customer tries to withdraw money, there are delays and new requirements such as fees, taxes or compliance deposits.

The FCA's register lets anyone check whether a firm is authorised and what its official contact details are. A prestigious London address is no proof of legitimacy: serviced-office and shared addresses are inexpensive to hire. If a firm is not on the FCA register for the activity it is offering, it should not be trusted with money.

Red flags

  • A trading website whose firm is not authorised by the FCA.
  • A prestigious London address that you cannot verify as that firm's office.
  • Promises of high returns with low risk.
  • Pressure to make quick or repeated deposits.
  • Delays and new fees when you try to withdraw.

If you were targeted

  1. 1Check the firm on the FCA Register and its warning list before paying anything.
  2. 2Use contact details from the FCA Register, not from the firm approaching you.
  3. 3Stop paying and keep all evidence if withdrawals are blocked.
  4. 4Report the firm to the FCA (0800 111 6768) and to Action Fraud.
  5. 5Tell your bank immediately; you may be able to dispute card payments.
