What happened
Huntersville Today reported on 7 November 2026 that the Town of Huntersville, North Carolina, warned that scammers are phoning Huntersville Electric customers and demanding payment for their power. In some cases the calls display the town Electric Department's own phone number on caller ID, which the town says is spoofed. The town is impersonated and is not involved in the calls. It said it had received reports from several customers and posted a scam alert on its website.
How the scam works
Utility payment scams rely on fear of losing power. The caller typically says the bill is overdue and that service will be disconnected within hours unless payment is made immediately over the phone, by card, bank details or sometimes prepaid cards. Seeing the utility's real number on caller ID makes the threat seem genuine, and the short deadline is meant to stop customers from checking their account or calling back.
The town said it does not collect payment information or take electric payments over the phone, so any caller asking for card or bank details to pay a Huntersville Electric bill is not the town. Spoofing the number is easy, which means a familiar caller ID is no guarantee. Card details given to a caller can be used for fraudulent purchases, and the customer's bill remains unpaid.
Customers are advised to hang up and call the Electric Department themselves using the number listed on the town's Electric page, and to check their account balance through normal channels. Anyone who gave card or bank details to such a caller should contact their bank at once and report the call to local police.
