What happened
Watchlist Internet, the Austrian online-fraud warning service, warned on 22 October 2026 about two scams that misuse the name of electronics retailer MediaMarkt. First, fake shops built to resemble MediaMarkt's online store: in a recently reported case the domain was mediamarkt-gg.com, which Watchlist Internet says was only registered in July 2026, differs from the real address mediamarkt.at, advertises prices well below the market average, and accepts only prepayment (credit card and PayPal are said to be 'currently unavailable'). People who order wait in vain for delivery and the money usually cannot be recovered. Second, emails to businesses offering a batch of 23 new IT devices from top brands, supposedly from a cancelled company order, well below the recommended retail price, with a PDF catalogue attached; the amount must be paid in advance to a private account with a German IBAN, and buying on invoice is refused. Watchlist Internet says the emails are sent from the domain @vertrieb-mediamarkt.de, which has nothing to do with the real company, and that the scammers use the name of MediaMarkt's real business-customer unit (MMS E-Commerce GmbH) and of a real sales manager, taken from publicly available data, to appear credible. Anyone who has paid should contact their bank as quickly as possible, stay alert for follow-up scams, and report the matter to the police.
How the scam works
Watchlist Internet says both schemes trade on MediaMarkt's familiar brand. The fake shop copies the look of the real online store but sits on a different, recently registered domain, and its very low prices are meant to persuade people to pay before looking closely. Only prepayment by bank transfer works: card and PayPal options are shown as 'currently unavailable', because those methods would let buyers dispute the charge.
The business offer works differently: companies receive what looks like a legitimate sales email with a catalogue of discounted devices from a cancelled order. Using the name of the retailer's real business-customer company and a real employee's name taken from public sources makes the email look authentic, but the sending domain is not MediaMarkt's and payment must go to a private account. MediaMarkt and MMS E-Commerce GmbH are impersonated, not involved.
