What happened

On 27 October 2026 New Zealand's Financial Markets Authority (FMA) added FMS Analytics Ltd, which uses the website fms-advisory.com, to its warning page on recovery scams targeting New Zealand investors. The FMA lists the entity among fraudulent entities and websites it has identified as associated with this type of scam. The listing gives a website and an email address, with no phone number. The page, which the FMA first published on 21 November 2025 and has updated since, describes how recovery scams work and how to protect yourself. The entry itself does not describe what FMS Analytics Ltd did in any particular case.

How the scam works

The FMA says it has seen an increase in recovery scams aimed at people who have previously lost money to investment scams. Victims are approached after losing funds. Scammers often claim to represent a government agency or a legitimate recovery firm, and may say they have recovered the victim's lost funds or that a previous investment has increased in value. The victim is then offered the chance to access the recovered funds or sell the previous investment at the increased value.

Before releasing any funds, the scammers demand upfront payments for supposed fees, taxes or levies. Once payments stop, the FMA says, the scammers cut off contact and no funds are ever returned. These are often advance-fee scams in disguise.

The FMA's protective advice has four parts. If someone claims to represent a government agency or regulator, verify their identity by contacting the agency directly using official contact details, not those provided by the person. Report suspicious claims to the FMA through its Report a Scam page. Avoid paying money to anyone claiming they can or have recovered your funds. Discuss any recovery offer with a trusted friend, family member or professional.
