What happened
MalwareTips published an investigation on October 15, 2026 concluding that the Promonowusa.com gift card offer is deceptive. The site uses a well-known retailer's name, colours or logo to advertise a free gift card worth hundreds, but MalwareTips says it is not affiliated with that retailer, which does not run, approve or fulfil the offer. The retailer's name is being misused.
The claim button does not lead to the retailer: it sends visitors through a third-party cost-per-action affiliate tracking link that carries an offer ID and the operator's affiliate ID. MalwareTips says the site does not identify any real company that will deliver the card. A screenshot in the MalwareTips report shows the page advertising a "$750 Target gift card"; Target is not involved.
How the scam works
Visitors usually arrive from a spam email, text or social-media ad saying they have been 'selected' for a large gift card. The landing page shows a few numbered steps (click, enter your email, 'complete 4–5 deals', claim), with countdown timers, 'limited cards left' banners and unverifiable 'already claimed' counters.
Next come requests for name, phone number, home address, date of birth and 'survey' answers about income and habits, which turn the visitor into a marketing lead. To 'unlock' the card, the visitor must complete sponsored offers: free trials that become paid subscriptions, app installs, games, insurance quotes, and loan or credit card applications. Each one pays the operator a commission.
After a few deals the visitor is told they need more, an offer 'did not track', or the claim is 'pending review'. MalwareTips warns of recurring charges, hard credit inquiries, spam calls and follow-up scams.

Red flags
- A huge gift card from a famous store for a few minutes' effort.
- "Complete a few deals" required to claim.
- A domain that isn't the retailer's, and a claim button that leaves the site.
- No company named as responsible for sending the card.
If you were targeted
- 1Cancel every trial or subscription you started through the offers, and keep the confirmations.
- 2Check bank and card statements for unfamiliar or recurring charges and dispute them; ask for a new card if you entered card details.
- 3If you filled in a loan or credit application, check your credit report.
- 4Report the site to the retailer whose brand it uses, the platform that showed the ad, and your consumer protection agency.
