What happened

Republic World reported on 29 October 2026 that the Embassy of the Russian Federation in India filed an FIR with Delhi Police over an alleged recruitment fraud involving a fake website, www.embassytest.com, and a LinkedIn account impersonating the Embassy. According to the report, the Embassy received 17 complaints from Indian citizens who alleged they were cheated through the website and the account. The allegations have not been proven in court.

How the scam works

According to the report, the site and LinkedIn account were allegedly used to offer employment opportunities in Russia, and job seekers allegedly paid money through a merchant named EMBASSYTEST, which police traced to payment infrastructure connected with Stripe Payments and PayPal. A case was lodged with the Cyber Cell of New Delhi District. Police told the outlet that they arrested one man, who was remanded in police custody, and that they recovered two mobile phones holding alleged evidence, including details of the website domain, payment applications, email accounts, LinkedIn-related correspondence and WhatsApp conversations about website development and payments. Investigators are examining around 50 transactions and the possible involvement of associates.

The Russian Embassy, Stripe and PayPal are not accused of anything; the embassy is the party being impersonated and the payment services are named only as the channels the money passed through. We do not name the arrested man, who has not been convicted.

The report relies partly on unnamed police sources, so details may change as the investigation continues. The general lesson is that real embassies do not recruit workers through payment-taking websites or social-media accounts.
