Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson announced on Oct. 14, 2026, that his office has sued The Metal Roof Company (also referred to as The Metal Roofing Company in the release) and its owner, Danile Toland, alleging substandard and defective roofing work, failure to respond when customers reported problems, and at least one job where the company took payment for a new roof and never began the project [1]. Five consumers reported combined losses of more than $60,000. The suit was filed in Franklin County Common Pleas Court [1].
Important: This is a civil lawsuit. Toland and the company have been sued, not convicted of a crime. The allegations are unproven unless a court rules otherwise.
(A companion Ohio AG lawsuit the same day against Journey Home Restoration LLC and Jason Kaczur is covered in a separate Scammers.com article and is not repeated here.)
How the alleged scheme worked
According to the Ohio Attorney General [1]:
- Metal roof sales and installs. The company sells and installs metal roofing in central Ohio.
- Substandard work. For some consumers, the AG alleges the work was defective or substandard.
- No response to complaints. When customers reported roof problems, the company allegedly failed to respond.
- Payment without performance. In one case, the company allegedly accepted payment for a new roof but did not begin the project.
- Ongoing operations. Because the business appears to remain open, the AG’s office is asking other affected consumers to come forward.
“When Ohioans pay for contractors to repair their homes, they trust those contractors to follow through,” Wilson said. “Not doing the work is not acceptable” [1].

Red flags
- Large deposits before materials arrive or permits are pulled.
- Contractor who stops answering after payment when leaks or defects appear.
- No written contract specifying start date, materials and completion timeline.
- Pressure to pay cash or add change orders without paperwork.
- Unwillingness to provide local references, license numbers or insurance certificates.
What to do if you’re targeted
- Document everything—contracts, photos of incomplete work, texts and bank records.
- Contact the Ohio AG at 1-800-282-0515 or OhioProtects.org if you dealt with this company [1].
- File a complaint with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and check your local building department for permit status.
- Before hiring any roofer, verify licensing, get multiple bids and avoid paying the full balance until final inspection.
