Attorney Valerie Lau Charged With Husband in Alleged $60 Million GameOn Investor Fraud

Startup lawyers who also sit close to the CEO can become part of an alleged investor-fraud story. On Jan. 23, 2025, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California announced that a 25-count indictment had been unsealed charging GameOn founder Alexander Charles Beckman, 41, and attorney Valerie Lau Beckman (“Lau”), 38, both of San Francisco, with conspiracy, wire fraud, securities fraud, identity theft, and other offenses; Lau was also charged with obstruction of justice [1].

What the indictment alleges

According to the indictment as summarized by prosecutors [1]:

1. From September 2018 to July 2024, Beckman allegedly raised over $60 million from GameOn investors while making false statements about revenue, cash, and customers.
2. Lau, an attorney who worked on GameOn corporate and transactional matters from at least 2016 to 2024 (the couple married in October 2023), allegedly conspired with Beckman to defraud investors, the company, and a bank.
3. The couple allegedly used over $4 million of investor funds on personal expenses, including San Francisco residences, private schools, and a wedding venue.
